Country Fried Steak

Not your typical Canadian meal.

2023 marked the first meal we had at Texas Roadhouse after a day of Target shopping in Grand Forks, ND. My son ordered this as his entree, and since that day it's become a regular in our meal rotation.

Also known as Chicken Fried Steak, a piece of New York Strip is tenderized, seasoned and breaded, then fried to perfection. Country gravy, also not a staple in Canadian homes, is made from pan drippings, milk, seasonings and flour and served generously ladled over.

Here's how to make it:

Tenderize a New York Strip steak. Salt and pepper each side.

Season a dish of flour with onion powder, garlic powder, powdered ginger, paprika and a dash of cayenne pepper.

Coat the steak in seasoned flour, then beaten egg, then seasoned flour again.

Add oil to generously cover the bottom of a cast iron skillet. Add steak to pan over medium hugh heat. Cook 4 minutes per side.

Add a few tablespoons of flour to pan drippings and make a roux. Season the roux with salt, pepper and fresh nutmeg. Whisk in milk until desired consistency is reached.
